Ancestral Sunrise

This is my own version of a symbolic sunrise. Almost no natural formation on earth is as coveted by artists as Mesa Arch. Forty-odd feet of it, positioned so precisely that for most days of the year anyone who bothers to be standing there is handed the same spectacle. For a few minutes the underside of the arch catches fire from below, lit by a sun that has not yet cleared the canyon floor. It is the most photographed sunrise in America and it has never once felt second-hand. I have not stopped wanting to see it again.
