The ocean has a reputation for being rough and difficult and broadly against you, and it earns that reputation regularly. On this evening it was the precise opposite of all of it, flat, warm, unhurried, almost affectionate, and I found that considerably more unnerving than a gale. Everything vast is at its strangest when it is being gentle, because you know it is not obliged to be, and you know exactly how long it intends to keep it up.
