Hallstatt, from above the rooftops, early, before the first boat. This town pulled its living out of salt for three thousand years before anyone thought to come here and photograph it, and it still wears that older business in its bones. The church, the tight streets stacked up the slope, the mountain leaning over the whole arrangement with its arms folded. I came for the view, which is famous. I stayed for the arithmetic of it, which is not.
