The Arashiyama grove outside Kyoto, looking straight up the length of it. The stalks never stop moving and never stop knocking against one another, and that sound, hollow, wooden, irregular, is the real reason people come, although almost nobody says so. A whole forest of hollow wood, playing itself, all afternoon, for nobody in particular. Bring your eyes by all means. Close them for a minute while you are there.
