Bears Rising
A fine art photograph by Justin Cooper
Big Bear Lake sits higher than most of the European Alps, which nobody quite believes until they try to breathe up here in February. It takes four proper seasons a year and wears each of them completely. This is the one that arrives quietly, over water, before the town has woken: deep green against that rich blue, and then the sun gets high enough and spins every color together at once. I came here as a child. It is the first place I remember being at peace.
