A stilt village standing over its own reflection, so that the whole settlement appears twice and neither version of it touches land. Every door here opens onto a boat. Children learn the tide before they learn the road, for the excellent reason that there is no road, and they move about that village at six years old with a competence that would take me a decade. Everything I know about where to live was arranged somewhere else, by somebody else, and it shows.
