Contrast Stride

I waited days on that valley for the smoke to thin and the sun to find a way down through it. When it came it came absurdly, excessively, a set of rays through dense cloud that seemed like showing off even at the time, and it reached the whole way to the ground, to the herd standing directly in front of me, which had asked for none of it and did not look up. Light of that kind has no interest in who it lands on. That, I have come to think, is rather the point of it.
