Stand Off

The closer you come to the youngest in a herd, the more completely you are watched. They knew where I was from the moment I arrived and they went on knowing it, without fuss, without a single step taken in my direction. Nothing was threatened and nothing needed to be. That is not aggression. It is a boundary, drawn once and drawn clearly, by an animal with no need whatsoever to raise its voice, and I have met few people who could do it half so well.
