Porto, split cleanly in two, with the river running down between the halves and refusing to take a side. Both banks lean out over it, crowding down to the water, each one built up over centuries by people determined to have the better view of the other. Neither has ever entirely won. I sat on the south side with a glass of something and watched the north side get all the evening light, which I suspect settles it.
