All fifteen at Ahu Tongariki, standing again after the tsunami of 1960 came through and laid every one of them flat. Stripped of color they stop being fifteen separate stones and become one sentence, said slowly, in a language nobody now speaks. That the most complete row on the island is also the most thoroughly rebuilt one moves me more rather than less. Somebody chose to put them back. That is the part of the story I keep.
