Five moai at Ahu Vai Uri, holding still against the last color of the day as they have held still against every last color for eight hundred years. The wind came off the Pacific the way it always does there, and the stone did not care about that either. The sky did nearly all the work in this photograph and I will not pretend otherwise. My part was to be standing there when it started, and to have the sense to say nothing.
