The bison population in Yellowstone is genuinely impressive, and I was not there for them at all. I was out scouting the wolf packs that call that valley home. Then a herd came out of the intense fog, one animal at a time, enormous and entirely silent, resolving out of nothing at all about forty yards from where I stood. The morning's yellow rays came through and gave a tone to them I could not have arranged. I forgot about the wolves.
