Coney Island in the cold months. One walker, four miles of sand, and a boardwalk that will carry fifty thousand people in July and cannot at present remember why. The wind comes straight off the water and down the empty boards and there is nobody to stop it. Emptiness suits the place enormously. Nobody who makes a living there would agree with me for a second.
