A single thatched palapa on an empty Mexican beach at first light, the sierra standing across the water and taking the earliest of the color onto itself. Nobody else had come down yet. No footprints but mine on the whole length of it. For about an hour it was entirely possible to believe that the beach belonged to me, and I did believe it, and then a truck came along the sand and it belonged to everybody again.
