The paddock at Laguna Seca before the first session of the day, while the light is still low and lying along the ground and the engines are still cold. Cars of this age are warmed by hand, one at a time, by men who talk to them quietly and are not embarrassed about it. It smelled of petrol and wet grass and dew burning off canvas. I have rarely stood anywhere so purposeful and so entirely unhurried at the same moment.
