Ahu Tahai, on Easter Island, after the sun had gone down and taken the noise of the day away with it. These faces have looked inland for eight hundred years, keeping watch over people who have been gone for the greater part of that. The town behind them is barely a century old and they have not once turned round to look at it. Whatever they were set there to guard, they are still guarding, and nobody now alive can tell you what it was.
