Fishing boats at anchor on flat water under a sky gone entirely pink, each of them laying a thin line of it back across the water toward me. Nobody aboard was awake. Every one of those men had been up in the dark and would be up in the dark again, and this, the best quarter of an hour of the day by some distance, was being spent entirely on itself. The light was gone fifteen minutes later.
