Inside the Roman arena at Verona, which has been in continuous use for two thousand years without a serious interruption. Gladiators, then opera, then an ordinary Tuesday evening with somebody sweeping the steps. The snow along the horizon is the Alps: they were standing there for the first performance ever given in this bowl, and they fully intend to be standing there for the last one.
