Neuschwanstein. The nineteenth-century palace above Hohenschwangau, near Füssen in southwest Bavaria. The Swan Castle, and the one Disney borrowed and never quite gave back. It was built by a king who wanted to live inside an opera, which is precisely what it still looks like from up here: not a fortress, never a fortress, but a stage set in stone, raised at enormous cost by a man who preferred the story to the country he was actually given.
