Thousand Faces

A fine art photograph by Justin Cooper

The rakan statues at Otagi Nenbutsu-ji, up the hill above Kyoto. Twelve hundred of them, each one carved by a different amateur hand, every one now wearing its own coat of moss. One is laughing outright. One is holding a tennis racquet. Not a single face here was made by a person who did this for a living, and you can feel that in every row. A thousand ordinary people, long gone, each leaving behind the one stone face they had in them.
