There is something oddly tranquil about the sound of a great deal of water going somewhere it has always gone. Nature overwhelming its own surroundings, at volume, without pause, and with no audience required. I sat at the base of this one through a hazy Yellowstone afternoon, deafened and entirely content, watching heavy darks meet brilliant whites. I have stood in front of a good many falls now. Not one of them has yet become ordinary to me.
