Fushimi Inari, high up on the mountain trail where the crowd finally thins away to nothing. Every gate in that tunnel was paid for by a business, and the name of the business is painted on the reverse, so you climb up through prayer on one side and a ledger on the other, mile after mile of it. I used to think that was a contradiction. I have come to think it is the truest thing about devotion anywhere on earth.
