Sea stacks standing out on wet sand at low tide on the northern coast of British Columbia, each one carrying its own small forest up on its shoulders. In six hours none of this is walkable and none of it is reachable and the whole arrangement is out at sea again. The trees know that better than I did. They have arranged their roots accordingly, and they have been arranging them since before anybody came along to admire the result.
