Four Panes
A fine art photograph by Justin Cooper
Four panes of colored glass set into an old Italian window, and three of them turning one ordinary courtyard into three separate afternoons. Nothing whatever outside that window changed while I stood there. Everything outside it changed. I have not found a cleaner demonstration of what a photograph is, or a better argument for standing in front of pictures at all. The world does not alter, and the glass you put in front of it does everything.
