A storm was working itself out over the jagged country below, all noise and dark and business. Above it, entirely untroubled, unaware, was the most intense gold I have ever stood underneath. I remember standing in that light and thinking that the two halves of the sky had nothing whatever to do with one another. That the one had no idea the other was happening. I have thought about it a great deal since.
