Hand-cut glass with almost no light behind it, so that what little does come through is the only thing left alive in the frame. Somebody set every one of those pieces by hand, in lead, on a bench, with cold fingers, and then walked away and left the sun to do the rest of the work forever. It was an act of considerable faith in an arrangement they would not live to see tested. So far the sun has held up its end of it.
