A hotel at the edge of a frozen lake, the peaks behind it keeping their own weather and sharing none of it. Almost all the color had gone out of the world by then, and what little remained belonged entirely to that one building, as though somebody had set it down there to give the mountains a thing to be measured against. I walked out onto the ice to make the picture, which was probably unwise. Standing there in the cold and the quiet, I was glad somebody had.
