What They Watched

A fine art photograph by Justin Cooper

The Dolomites, seen through the firing slot of a position dug in the First World War. This is the view men held at that altitude, through winters nobody would choose, for reasons that were explained to them at the time and made perfect sense to somebody a long way away. It is one of the most beautiful things I have ever put an eye to. I could not enjoy it for a single second, and I do not think it is meant to be enjoyed.
